Victory Poker pro, Antonio Esfandiari (32) clinched his second WPT title when he took down the 2010 WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic this week. Esfandiari took home a substantial paycheck of $ 870 124 bringing his total live tournament winnings to $4,300,000.

"It doesn't feel good not to make a final table for seven years, but to make it and come back and win after the rollercoaster ride I had to go through tonight, feels pretty damn good," Esfandiari said.

GOOD TURNOUT FOR IRISH POKER

Prize pool guarantee overtaken by large field
Ladbrokes Poker.com reports that the 633 player entry field for its 2010 Irish Poker Festival this weekend pushed the prize pool well beyond the guarantee and now stands at Euro 316 000.
When InfoPowa went to press the field had been reduced by half to 281 in the first day's action, which featured many international poker players as well as a host of internet aces.
The 2010 Festival, held in Killarney, Ireland, is in its third consecutive year and carries a buy-in of Euro 500. The first prize in the event, which has grown steadily in stature and popularity, is a useful Euro 75 000.

CHEEKY ONLINE POKER RECRUITING

Party Poker singes the Australian government beard

Whilst it is true that the Australian government has not been exactly ferocious in enforced its laws against online gambling, the fact remains that the Interactive Gaming Act 2001 does make it an offence for any company in Australia or overseas to provide online casino games to any person who is ''physically present in Australia''.

The punitive fines attached to such activities are no joke, either - up to A$220 000 a day for individuals, and A$1.1 million a day for companies.

All the more surprising, therefore, that Gibraltar-based Party Poker.com has been so bold in its recruitment efforts and statements of intent on Australia.

Over the weekend the Sydney Morning Herald latched on to the story, reporting that Party Poker is "...setting up office in Australia and advertising for staff even though the business is prohibited, not taxed and subject to fines of up to $1.1 million a day."

This apparent singeing of the 'King of Australia's' beard apparently includes "...advertising for a head of marketing in Australia, based in Sydney, to 'leverage the brand at the forefront of the poker market in Australia and New Zealand'''.

The SMH claims that the Interactive Gaming Act 2001 has never been enforced, with the government Downunder making no attempt to restrict the activities of online poker games or online casinos.

And it notes the Productivity Commission's recent draft report into gambling, which estimated that A$790 million flowed offshore to illegal online sites in 2008, without any of it recouped in tax.

"Internet gambling is also the fastest-growing type of gaming and is estimated to have tripled its earnings from Australians between 2004 and 2008," the SMH report informs.

The commission's final report is due next week and industry players expect it will recommend the government overturn the online gaming ban.

The SMH article quotes from Party Poker's advertisement that it is a ''...growing online poker business in Europe with plans to enter the Australasian market''.

Perhaps wisely at this point, the parent Party Gaming group did not respond to a request for comment!

POKERSTARS GEARS UP FOR NEW ONLINE POKER RECORD
2009-12-22

R-day is December 27th

Hold onto your hats, the largest online poker site in the world, Pokerstars, is gearing up for another world-record breaking fest. The target? To break the site's previous two and still existing records for "Largest Online Poker Tournament".

Pokerstars established a record in December 2008 when 35 000 players took to the tables simultaneously, proving the stability and strength of its software platform. Then, only six months later, it almost doubled the record by hosting 65 000 players from 155 different countries at once. That stands today as an official Guiness Book of Records entry.

The next attempt to improve on 65 000 players again has the sanction of the Guiness Book of Records and is scheduled for December 27th at 14h45 Eastern Time. It will take the form of a No-Limit Hold'Em tournament with a buy-in of just $1 and, to the record breaking excitement, PokerStars is guaranteeing a first prize of $50 000 and a total prize pool of $300 000. That means that the top 30 000 players will receive prize money.

Bryan Slick, PokerStars' Tournaments Team Leader said: "Players really enjoy these events, and so do we. There is a real thrill when the tournament begins and everyone realizes just how many people are taking part from all over the world."

Registration is open now under 'Tourney' > 'Special' of the PokerStars client, but stand warned - there is no late registration for this event so players must buy in before 14:45 ET on December 27.
